MobileChat v2.1 Now Available

Horizontal chatting in MobileChat v2.1

After a nearly 6 month hiatus from the project, I give you MobileChat v2.1.

Change Log:

  • Horizontal/Landscape Orientation Availability
  • “New IM” finally works
  • “Send” Button has been relocated to the keyboard (in place of return)
  • iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 Compatibility
  • DNS Issue that plagued 1.x and 2.0 has been resolved.
  • BSD Subsystem dependency should be gone.
  • Added support for XMPP
  • GTalk has been temporarily removed
  • Sign On progress notifications (as seen in screenshots)
  • Disconnect Notification: if you get kicked off, or you can’t sign on, you’ll be alerted now
  • Conversation code-base optimized

    • MobileChat is free for everyone, so if you use this program regularly, please consider donating to it’s development by clicking here to donate with PayPal.

    We’ll try to get GTalk back in as soon as possible, but as far as we can tell, it’s definitely going to require a newer libpurple, which we haven’t successfully been able to do build for the iPhone.

    XMPP should work fine as long as your server has plaintext authentication and TLS.

    Note: MobileChat now also pulls the images for it’s chat bubbles and text bars from the SMS app, so if you modified any of those images in SMS, it will also be effected in MobileChat. We plan to add some sort message view skinning in future releases and this was definitely a step towards that.

    I have an iPod Touch and some images appear to be missing when you hold a conversation. You say it relies on images from the SMS app. Perhaps the iPod touch doesn’t have these, because they just appear black? Anyone got a fix?

    Anyway, great work :D.

    Thank you very much for this release! I must say that this is quite a significant release (accelerameter support et al), contrary to what you said in your previous entry. However, it hasn’t showed up in the installer quite yet (the suspense is killing me).

    One thing I have to question is the relocation of the “Send” button. Will a “Shift + Enter/Send” allow us to skip a line (much like the “return” button did)? Or is that “feature” removed completely?

    Once again, I anticipate using this update!

    I suppose the release size is a bit relative. I have a lot of features in mind that I didn’t have time to implement to 2.1, so in that sense it wasn’t nearly as significant as it could have been.

    As of right now theres no way to add in new lines via shift-enter, but I’ll take a look at adding that support in for v2.2 if possible.

    We’re definitely aware of the non-english use of MobileChat, so I plan to add language packs to v2.2 as well as full foreign character support, would you mind if I contact you once they’re implemented to create a french translations?

    We’re still waiting on our repository admin to update the app, it shouldn’t be too much longer now.

    It appears when I sign into my MSN account (tried different ones), only some of my contacts will appear- sometimes, my buddy list is empty, even though there are people online, they just don’t show up.

    Amazing work though, I just really really hope I can get it working for me asap!

    I have an iPod Touch and am using a hotmail.co.uk email account.

    this problem happen because some of yours contact have utf8 chars.

    hey shaun…i just installed this with winscp and when i open it it freezes on the screen for like 5 seconds that goes back to springboard. i tried deleting and doing it again but still the same thing…any ideas?

    You need to set the permissions for the Chat.app folder and the file inside the folder named “MobileChat” to 755.

    Works great!
    Testing it with AIM, IMs appear instantly! Very impressive.

    Links come out as html tags in IMs. Perhaps something for the next release?

    I got it working but i have an iPod Touch! This ruins the entire app! Please! How do I fix this? This app is supposed to be for the iTouch and the iPhone! Wahhhhh! lol

    ok first thing i noticed is that the bottom row of buttons are hard to press. takes multiple times to press.( landscape view ) next the smileys do not work and if a user has special font or bold font on it replies with html b4 and after your reply ie. hey whats up still testing it out. But mainly the bottom row button problem needs to be address.

    Overall though its awesome and thanks Shaun for all your hard work and effort into updating this app. Hope my Input helps. Thanks again =]

    i jus flipped it over 180 landscape and now the bottom row buttons work alot better. lol =p ( home button on the leftside )

    Yes, there is a problem with the bottom row with the home button on the right (haven’t tried it with it on the left though).

    There was also a problem with it displaying this character ” > ”

    Still a great app though!

    Ok so great work but still issues, MSN doesnt work still I can see my contact list when I sign in but I am unable to receive messages and unable to send them it looks like I sent them but I asked my friends and they said they got nothign from me.

    I’ve also noticed that the message notifications (i.e. the little red one that appears when you have a new email, call, text, IM, etc…) no longer appear under this version.

    ok more problems to report using MSN messenger, I cant always see my full buddy list sometimes it only shows a few people, people can see that I am online but are unable to send messages to me I cant receive them I sometimes can send messages though to the people I can see. When I click on the “Get Away” it will show on msn that I am away and Available but nothing else works! Please This is the same issue as before please get this solved!

    Here’s the change long from the latest SVN commit:

    Added localizable strings
    Added support for UTF8 to names, messages, and AGRegex.
    Fixed Balloon image issue with iPod Touch.
    Readded the sound files.
    Changed the way HTML cleaning is handled.
    Added support to receive and correctly parse line breaks.

    This should address most of the issues you guys are having. The rest will be taken care of soon as well.

    We’ve already gotten French and Italian translations complete, so they’ll be bundled with v2.2.

    it wont connect through edge. only wifu. when im on edge, it just hangs on “connecting” then it crashes to the spring board. i already set permissions to 0755

    very strange, my input field is black, since the typing color is also black, i dont see my words?

    i installed it manually via your link and all permissions are 777 …. what can the cause of that problem be?

    I mean the text input field, which is white in your pictures, and was before in my old version of your app…its black now ?!

    Awesome app!

    I was having an issue with 2.0b and even with apollo IM where I would experience a hard crash, and would have to boot from recovery.

    My buddy list used to be about 250 people, but i cut that down to about 30. I thought it had fixed the problem, but it crashed again (still on 2.0b).

    I’m not on 2.1 and have not yet experienced the problem (knock on wood). Was this an issue that was a ddressed in 2.1? or am i just lucky.. lol.

    Yep, doesn’t work on Edge like the last version did. When you attempt to connect on Edge, it tries, but then crashes to the springboard.

    Same for me is not working with EDGE and German t-mobile. Goes back to home screen after long login time. On WiFi it is working great with MSN and ICQ

    GREAT work!
    Although XMPP doesn’t seem to work with my server (Openfire based, enabled TLS)
    it reads:
    Authenticating -> Initializing Stream -> Authenticating
    and that’s where it stops :(

    Perhaps your Openfire instance is using ssl based authentication. I will be testing this version of mobilechat in a couple hours on my openfire box. I will report back here tonight.

    Works great on home wifi. On work wifi it opens to empty whitescreen then quits with no explanation. In other words whatever it does on a network before actually signing in (AIM) can cause it to quit. My work may be blocking connection but it would be nice for mobilechat to report error instead of no explanation. Thanks great work though.

    It wasn’t working for me on Edge earlier, but I just tried it again and it works. Don’t know what the difference is but we’ll see what the future brings.

    I was just wondering when yahoo messenger is coming out for mobilechat, I noticed in the mobilechat app folder there is a yahoo icon there but no yahoo messenger, I will be willing to donate if yahoo is on this program, keep me updated

    Ok, Edge is messed up. Early yesterday, it didn’t work. Yesterday afternoon, it did. Last night and today: doesn’t work. Bug fix anyone?

    EDGE signing in doesn’t work for me either. It gets a little past the Authorization and then crash to Springboard. Also, when in horizontal, the black notifications don’t go across the whole screen, getting cut off 3/4 of the way over.
