What’s Google’s Beef with Safari?
I love GMail. I mean, I really love GMail. If it weren’t for GMail, I wouldn’t use email at all. Let’s face it, if you’ve used GMail, you know it’s not the same as email…why? I have no idea. I can’t list specific reasons (it’ll take forever), fact of the matter is that it just is. It’s just better. Plain and simple.
Well, Google’s been busily working their butts off to get some pretty cool features into GMail, stuff like IMAP support, better filtering and a cleaner look at just a few of the awesome things that’s been circulating the GMail dev camp. If you use Firefox, you’re in luck; the new GMail looks great in Firefox and runs even better!
What’s my problem?
IT DOESN’T WORK IN SAFARI! :( Ok, it works, but it’s pretty bad. The interface doesn’t seem to be compatible with Safari (things are offset, labels aren’t aligned, etc…), the auto-complete for contacts in new emails works sporadically, if at all, and the contacts take about 2 minutes to fully load, before displaying a fragmented broken interface that’s hardly usable. I’ve even had cases where it locks up Safari if it’s left open for too long!
Safari’s becoming a popular browser. Mac’s are becoming increasingly popular and Safari usage is skyrocketing as a result. I could see not supporting a browser like IE 5 or something like that, but Safari is one of the best browser’s there is, how is it not a priority to Google?
Yea yea, I could use Firefox, and don’t get me wrong, I love Firefox, but Safari is 10x as fast if not faster and it doesn’t bog down my Mac. And sure I could use the “Older Version” link at the top of the GMail page, but the problem with that is Google left out an ability to permanently set yourself to the Older Version of GMail, clicking it everytime? Come on, that’s annoying.
So I plea to you Google, please fix the new GMail for Safari, or hell, just make the old GMail default for unsupported browsers. (Pretty clever, eh?)
Aside from all that… keep up the good work Google.
Wow, I feel the exact same way you do. It’s actually kind of sad because I love Safari and Gmail but the two just don’t mix.
Even more, the older version of Gmail didn’t have Gchat support for Safari. That sucks.
