MobileChat v2.0b Released!

Phew! Finally, MobileChat v2.0b is released! It was a pretty long road to get here, but we finally have libpurple implemented. This is really going to allow us to do some fun stuff in the future and integrate all of the “cool” features you guys have been asking for. This is definitely the biggest release since v1.0 of MobileChat, the closest would be v1.2, but they both pale in comparison. While it’s not a drastic difference on the front end, the entire back end has been overhauled to fix a great deal of the issues we’ve been having. Here’s the run down of all the changes:

  • Removed libfiretalk/BBTOC
  • Integrated libpurple
  • Buddy Alias Support
  • New non-invasive IM notifications
  • New Protocol Support: .Mac, ICQ, GTalk, MSN
  • Complete overhaul to Conversaiton view. No more scrolling bugs. Bubble’s look like iChat’s now, no more extra padding.
  • Complete overhaul to Buddy List backend. Manages memory much better, should handle large buddy lists far better.
  • A lot of the memory management and leaks issues have been fixed.
  • Far more stable then previous versions
  • Ability to view an away message in “More” view
  • Added ability to keep EDGE alive.
  • Added ability to bring EDGE up when it’s down, you no longer need use safari to force it up
  • Completely redid the way Vibration and Sound notifications are handled for much better stability.
  • Uses new “Event” manager to deliver events between classes
  • Tons of other misc bug and stability fixes.
  • New icon from Louie Mantia

Just to recap the highlights the three most important aspects of this release: new IM services, scrolling issues have been resolved, much more stable.Just to note, GTalk is still a bit buggy and might not work for everyone. We didn’t want to hold up the release of v2.0b for GTalk so we’re releasing it as is for now. We’ll have another minor release this week to fix the GTalk bugs. Also, GTalk right now only works with @gmail.com accounts, so Hosted Gmail accounts (gmail for your domain) will not work until the next release.Lastly, we would really appreciate it you guys could take the time to donate to MobileChat to help keep us going. You can donate via PayPal by clicking this link.Hope you enjoy the new release,Shaun

Great, but what about quickshareit for the rest of the world?
You’re great, but you ‘ve really kept things quiet over at quickshareit’s camp…

Honestly, we had put QSI on the shelf for a bit since there didn’t seem to be any demand for a new version, and we focused on other stuff.

The last 2 weeks or so we’ve seen numerous comments about QSI on the blog so we’re going to bring our attention back to it and finish up the new version and release it soon.

Please release the new version of quickshareit! it is so useful and i am looking forward to beta 5.

thanks.

I third the requests for QSI! I think you’ll see the new version become a lot more popular than you think…!

you ‘re kidding right?
on my dock there are less than 20 apps and one of them is QSi since day 1!
it’s like what Jing is trying to do, only snappier and a whole lot more at the same time!

Great job guys! Mobile Chat 2.0 is definitely a better product than Appolo. Any hope for Yahoo Messenger protocol?

I’ve been waiting for gtalk support and at least it’s a step in the right direction. My questions are (1) are you working on Yahoo support and (2) is the goal to have a unified buddy list where I can see all my friends regardless of protocol ( like Trillian )? The 2nd question is more important to me than the 1st.

One more thing. Since gtalk doesn’t work yet I haven’t tried this but do you stay logged in even if you are doing other things on the iPhone ( like the SMS basically )? I would hate to keep having to log back in because I made a phonecall or something.

Just installed the new version and it looks great. Much better. Keep up the great work.

Sorry Apollo but this just feels more like a native iphone app.

I wasnt sure, but does anyone know if this goes on our data plan instead of our text messages? thanks!

would be very nice to have jabber support in mobilechat

keep up the good work

is there any way to change the away message with this app?

Is GTalk actually working? I have a @gmail account but afte rlogging in, none of my buddies are listed. No way to chat with someone.

[…] (MobileChat 2.0  (beta) is supposed to have gtalk/jabber as well, but … the comments sound a lot like my experience). […]

Why isnt there a progess with the IM developers?
Even Apollo’s dev team quit :[.

Tomer, they paused development on MobileChat to work on Quickshareit, and as I understand it, there is only one functioning developer at the moment, so progress is painfully slow for all of us.

Any way to add some sort of sound for notification of new messages on an iPod Touch?
