Apple Store Inventory System

You walk into the Apple store, and it’s a ridiculous display of order and cleanliness. Everything seems to be where it needs to be, and the employee’s have so much technology available to them to keep it that way.

When you checkout, it’s usually a relatively smooth process, everything is done on the computer.

So you just have to imagine the system that they use to keep it all together. Recently I’ve been looking for some software to transition my parent’s small retail over to Mac, and I’ve come across plenty of things, but the most promising application was defentely Checkout (http://www.checkoutapp.com); and I assumed Apple used something proprietary with the same concepts as Checkout (or a higher level of course).

That’s simply not the case though…

A friend of mine recently sent these over after he had taken a trip to the Apple store to get his iMac repaired:

This may be an in-house system specific to this Apple store, but it makes you wonder why a company as big as Apple isn’t providing their retail stores with better solutions to manage them properly.

*Update*: Just a note, the system is entirely web-based and done in PHP with a MySQL backend. Very, non-apple ish. Where’s the WebObjects!?!?!
