Codec Pack for all the new Mac Users!

quicktime.jpgHere’s a codec pack I made with just about all of the codecs you’ll need for your new shiny mac you might of been fortounate enough to unwrap over the holidays.

While I swear by my Mac, I can’t say I’m aware of any Codec packs for Mac, and if there are it’s nothing like on Windows. This should make your movie viewing a bit easier.

Some might tell you to just download Perian, because it does everything. Perian advertises itself as the “swiss knife for QuickTime components”. It’s not. I’ve had terrible experiences with it, it’s XviD and DivX support are terrible. This package included Perian, because it does play some stuff, but it also includes the native intel builds for AC3 audio/XviD Video as well as DivX, WMV, etc..

You’re going to want to download the zip, extract it and move all of the .component files to /Library/Quicktime. The easiest way to get there, is open finder and do the following key combo: apple key + shift + g, and paste in this path: “/Library/Quicktime” and hit enter. From there, just drag the files into that folder and you’ll be good to go!

Enjoy.

Download Intel Codecs | Download PPC Codecs | Digg It!

Update: A lot of people have been suggesting VLC instead of using quicktime. VLC is a great app, I use it from time to time. The problem with VLC is that sure it has all the codecs bundled, but they’re only for VLC. You still can’t watch XviD or DivX, etc in FrontRow, or anything else that uses QuickTime as its video core.

Update 2: I’ve updated the AC3 Audio component that was bundled with it, the original one was causing Front Row to crash.

Update 3: There is now a PPC component bundle.

For me it says

Could not extract the file “AviImporter-r7 (Intel).component/Contents”
Could not create directory

I’ll try redownloading it though.

Update: I used the BOMArchiveHelper instead of the Unarchiver and it decompressed it successfully. I already have all of these components though. =/

Why not just download VLC player or Mplayer OS X? The codecs are included in those packages… so everytime you update them, the codecs are auto updated… and when you delete them, the codecs go too. Much less system clutter. Unless you’re doing video editing and you actually need codecs installed in your system directory, this is pointless.

If you know this will help you, however, by all means go for it. For some, it could be quite useful…

I still recommend people to use Videolan (VLC). It is by far the best video player out there especially since the latest version supports WMV playback as well.

But if you really use Frontrow alot then I guess this helps.

Nice work man - given how easy macs are for the everyday enduser, it is high time something like this was made available. Should make watching movies in whatever format easy as pie!

the newest version of VLC (0.9) is universal, it can play basically anything you throw at it and has full screen controls just like quicktime, so why bother wasting time with codecs

Very cool, thanks so much!

This is a neat post! I remember how frustrating it was getting video to work then I got my first Mac in January 2006. Very helpful.

I believe you mean “Command Shift G” (not “go”)

I can’t wait to watch Divx in Front Row :)

[…] The codec pack can be downloaded from here at jacknjake.com […]

This is a great idea!

Ever heard of VLC? Quicktime is for…you guessed it, quicktime files.

go should say ‘g’, as in cmd shift g :)

Thanks a lot! I’ve been using various solutions patched together to make everything work… I just reinstalled everything and the first thing I did was hop on digg and see this. Awesome!

Would be nice if you described in the post exactly what codecs are included in this bundle.

I’m still looking for a good x264 Quicktime component…

Codec pack per Quicktime su Intel Mac…

Hey, that helped me play a video that never worked up until now. THanks man :)

Why not just use VLC?

www.videolan.org/vlc

Well you could install VLC and forget about all of this… (much better option)

Nice im about to start playing with Hackintosh will see if this works on it aswell :)

What are the video FourCCs of the files that won’t play in Perian alone?

Perian has always played XviD and DivX fine for me…

Thanks for this, I’ll try it out and see how it goes. Do the codecs only operate in Quicktime? or will they work in VLC and others now?
Also, is there any web plugin for WMV here?

Woot! Thanks!

I downloaded VLC media player right when I got my new MacBook. It is much better than quicktime, and you really won’t need any of these codecs.

Thanks dude!

Thanks for this, I am brand new to the mac so didn’t have a clue how to get some of these media types to play, you saved me a lot of googling!

Awesome job man, this works great for me. Thanks for posting it!

Nice package.

Cheers Mate.

Nathen

The AC3 codec included is poor. I’ve been using it for a while, and found that any AC3 encoded DIVX or XVID videos will crash Front Row immediately.

Rather than the included AC3 Codec, use the codec pack found here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27300

This one allows Core Audio to have AC3 sound, and does not crash. It’s great!

And have you reported any of these problems to us?

thanx 4 doin this!

many new switchers from WIN are sorta lost when it comes to this sorta stuff, since “from-the-start”-macusers are generally clueless when it comes to piracy, and let’s face it, if piracy didn’t exist, you wouldn’t need codec packs :-)

CHEERS M8

I love you.

This is a great idea. You need a dedicated URL for this pack, so it’s easy to post and share.

VLC works really well on OSX (http://videolan.org). Plays everything, has full screen, and is of course open source/free software.

Finally someone who as the amazing idea to make a codec for MAC and even better Mac Intel !!! Thank you so much and hope that you are going to keep them up to date :-)
Good luck for the futur !!!

Worked like a charm. Thanks.

Does these codecs work on G5 Powermacs? I just us VLC or Divx player and love the features I get with those for free compared to Quicktime. Full SCREEN without having to pay for it. F quicktime!

But I am willing to give this a try if it works with G5!

Just read about this on spiegel.de and downloaded it. Great work, works really fine.

thanks!

“following key combo: apple key shift go”
should be apple key shift g

This doesn’t work. Its missing the application components of at least Flip4Mac and i believe DivX

Thanks for the package.
It is going to save me a lot of time. Cheers,

You know you just have to download mplayer and it has all the Codec’s you need.

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

Thanks for the assembly. I had a few items you had as well, but some were not there, and others were superceded by yours. Appreciate it, and again, thanks.

Nice man. Thanks a lot. I can tell that my vids do look better and more file types do play. I totally appreciate it and hope you keep it up. Maybe put it on version tracker or something so we can more easily tell when you update it? Thanks again for you work and time.

Does it include SRT or SUB support?

Since I have no idea who “Jack & Jake” are, I’d have to recommend sticking to Perian Flip4Mac QuickTime, falling back to VLC, instead. I can play everything I can find on QT Perian Flip4Mac, I’d love to find out what movies are coming out that are suddenly unplayable…

@Henry Blackman:

Thanks, I’ve update the Codec Pack with the new AC3 component.

@Peter

We didn’t make any of these codecs, they’re just freely available on the internet. We just put them all together in one nice place so everyone could use them without the headache of searching for the right ones. As for VLC, FrontRow and a majority of Apple products utilize the Quicktime Core for video playback. VLC is awesome, but it doesn’t install the codec’s into Quicktime, so you lose the ability to use some other software. I use VLC and Quicktime for everything. Great combo!

This thing kicks (_I_)

Well, yes and no. I’ll agree with you by saying that 90% of videos encoded with DivX or one of the other codecs are probably pirated, but that doesn’t mean these are for piracy specifically. There’s a lot of legit content that utilizes some of the included codecs.

I agree, you should stick with Perian and Flip4Mac for Quicktime. Neater and more organized. It gets way too messy mucking about with codecs here and there.

Anything they can’t handle, use VLC. VLC supports the Apple Remote, by the way, and has a nice heads-up display.

Perian has a decent share of issues with DivX. It’s great for a lot of things though, it’s included in the bundle.

Also, to the author of Perian, the reason I’ve never reported the issues with DivX is because I didn’t have the interest to. I wasn’t testing Perian, I was trying to watch a movie. When the movie didn’t work, my priority was to fix the codec problem and download DivX,  not report the issue to Perian and wait for a fix. Although, in the spirit of developing a good product, I’ll be sure to report anything next time it occurs.

What about the codec available from the Divx site (labs.divx.com I think)? Once I installed that QT worked just fine for playback.

And for those who don’t know about codecs - don’t install many different packs thinking the more the better. Concflicts ‘often’ arise. Keep is simple - great motto.

Some apps use Quicktime to play back videos (like frontrow), so VLC is only part of the solution. Excellent work, thanks for hosting the download.

VLC is an excellent Swiss army knife-type mediaplayer, but I’ve been using it for about three years, and boy, it’s certainly not as stable as QT. It’s probably wiped out for me a dozen times today alone. QT is far less likely to do that. Also, try getting codec data on a currently playing file and revel in the lack of information. QT is far more detailed - to the extent that VLC looks like it doesn’t really present any codec info at all.

What I’d like to know is where you got that FLV.component from…

Are you aware of Perian (www.perian.org)?

Of course I’m aware of Perian. But that doesn’t answer my question. The FLV.component is included in the codec pack _in addition to_ the Perian.component. Does anybody know where this FLV.component is taken from? So far I got along pretty well with the FLV support delivered by Perian.. I’m not sure whether I should install an extra component for it.

Thanks a lot for the great pack! This is the one of its kind on the Mac platform. Thanks again! :)

Got to laugh at all the losers who post their comments “Have you heard of VLC?” “Why not use VLC?” “There’s an app called VLC which will…” etc) without reading what all the like-minded lamers above them wrote (except for the first person to mention VLC, of course). If you’re not reading other people’s comments, what makes you think people will read yours? What a waste of air.

Alas, this codec pack doesn’t have what I need either.

For all those that are recommending VLC!

Sure VLC is a great App without needing extra plugins.
But if you’re gonna use Front Row, you’re gonna need some plugins for Quicktime to read the files.

If you’ve never used Front Row then you just don’t understand the real issue.

Not sure why your having so much trouble with Perian.

Alright, several people have asked for a rundown of what each of the components in this pack do and what happens when they’re all together. Here’s a rundown:

A52Codec.component - decodes AC3/A52 audio.
AC3Codec.component - decodes AC3/A52 audio. Tends to have issues, especially after a few seeks. PPC only. Overridden by A52Codec.component.
AC3MovieImport.component - opens .ac3 files.
AviImporter-r7.component - opens .avi files. Overridden by Perian.component.
DivX Decoder.component - opens .avi files and decodes DivX and Xvid video. Tends to have issues with some Xvid and old DivX files. The .avi importer is overridden by Perian.component and the Xvid decoder is overridden by XviD_Codec.component.
DivX Encoder.component - encodes DivX video. Doesn’t actually work without DivX Toolkit.framework installed.
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component - encodes .wmv files.
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component - opens .wmv files and decodes WMV and WMA.
FLV.component - encodes .flv files. Doesn’t actually work without Flash 8 installed.
Perian.component - opens .avi and .flv, decodes DivX, Xvid, MS-MPEG4 variants, Flash video, VP6, H.264 in AVI, etc. Some of the decoders are overridden by DivX Decoder.component and XviD_Codec.component.
XviD_Codec-r58.component - decodes and encodes Xvid video. Interferes with playback of some old DivX files (fourcc DIV3).
XVIDDelegate - nothing. (it was written to enable Xvid decoding through the DivX decoder before DivX officially supported it.)

Also note that it is a violation of the EULA of the DivX, Flip4Mac, and FLV components to redistribute them yourself.

Nice pack, Man, but they’re right. Use VLC, it will play anything.

Hi,
I used the ppc-version and now my finder crashes when I activate an avi-file (10.3.9 and qt7pro). Has someone else also got this phenomenon?
Thanx for your feedback.
Bye, Ingo

Worked like a charm. Thanks.

Thanks so much, I have been having nightmares with this stuff, and it has been a great help. I’m a teacher and both myself and my class thank you for doing this!

Thanks a lot for this! It’s all well and good telling people to ‘just use vlc’ but vlc don’t work with frontrow!

“Ever heard of VLC?”
“Ever heard of VLC?”
“Ever heard of VLC?”

Ever think before you open your mouth?

There are several reasons you might want to use Quicktime instead of that marvelous app VLC - mostly because it’s a core system component. You want to burn a Divx file to CD/DVD to watch on your TV? You need to be able to read it in Quicktime.

Frontrow, iTunes, Toast and many other media apps are all enhanced tremendously with these codecs.

I really appreciate the work that was done to prepare this codec pack! It works quite well and it is a great enhancement to FrontRow!
I will certainly be featuring this product on my blog and website!

Folder quicktime is read only, How can I copy the stuff inside?

I’m a switcher with little knowledge at the moment. Thank’s for help.

Cris

thanks for this.

i’m sick of people telling me to use vlc when i have codec problems. i download video files to actually BURN them, and if they don’t play in quicktime, they won’t play when you encode and burn them.

i had all but 3 of these. you should stick the ac3 codec (different from the ac3 movieimport) in there too. it is the one that fixes problems with missing sound. took me a year to find it.

unfortunately, this bundle added to my 30+ codecs i’ve already installed, still doesn’t fix this problem i’m having. avi plays perfect in vlc (whoopee), but in quicktime, the sound is perfect but i get this scrambled video that looks like triangles overlayed on a checkerboard. any ideas?

VLC sucks… its crashes and crashes and crashes again, thx for the codecs =)

One major issue I have with VLC is that it doesn’t play full-screen on a second display. I have an old eMac that functions as my media center with a 29″ LCD hanging off of it. Quicktime plays movies fullscreen on the LCD like a champ, but VLC demands a window. Feh. Quicktime for the win. Thanks for this codec pack!

excellent pack! made my day. as I just bought a new macbook pro I looked intro front row and I am using it alot, couldnt figure out why some of the divxs wouldnt play in front row - so I installed this pack and voila! thanks a bunch!

Nice simple pack that does well. :) I second the recommendation for XiphQT!! That’s actually very useful to me.

By the way, have you heard of VLC? Not only is it much less stable than any other media player ever, but it’s also slower to the point of not working for any sort of movie with a half-decent resolution on my g4. So just use that! You’ve wasted your time here… ;)

thanks dude!

Perian was just updated to version 1.0. Do you plan to update your codec pack?

I understand that Perian has AC3 support. Do you include all of the Perian codecs in your codec pack? If so, which codec takes precendence– AC3 or AC52?

Thanks man!

This pack was perfect. Been trying to sort out some audio codec problems so I can use my Turbo.264 to convert Xvid files (uses QT as its core). Thank you.

Unfortunately, the author has not updated this pak in a while now. A52Codec is at 1.7.6 not 1.7.2, flip4mac components are updated, perian is at 1.0 not 0.5, etc. Download the pak if you want to have basic support, but you might have to do some searches online to get the latest versions.

If anybody is still responding to this : I downloaded and installed the codecs, but when i attempt to open .xvid files I get a “The movie could not not be opened the. The file is not a movie” message. It plays fine in VLC though, but I want to use it in Frontrow and Toast. Any thoughts?

Don’t woory about the last comment. I found that if I change the file extension to .avi it works fine, thanks for the download.

Oh god, you VLC loving fuckboys! Yes, videolan is the bomb for any-format simplicity, but if you EVER use frontrow, you want this pack. sheesh.

This is perfect and easy to use. Thanks a bunch!

I have a question that I’ve wondered for a long time. I hope someone actually answers it here…

A lot of codecs decode things that other codecs do. For example, Perian does a lot itself… in fact, it does a lot that QuickTime itself does.

If there are multiple codecs that do the same task, which one will be tasked with the encoding? I always hesitate to throw too many codecs in at once for fear of conflict, or getting the lesser codec overriding the better one.

How does that work?

hay!!
good project :)
senks :)

Thanks.

shit works! i luv Mac!

Needless to say a painless install process. Everything Works fine. As far as the person filling up the comments with harsh language. you might want to figure out how to run your mac before you start modding it. and adding codecs can hardly be considered modding. either way a child could install these codecs so I don’t understand how you could be having issues unless you put it in the system folders. Also it is nice to not have to install other 3rd party apps like VLC and others if I don’t have to. If I wanted more crap on my mac I would just go buy a PC from dell or HP. Obviously you wouldn’t be on this webpage if you didn’t need a codec of some sorts. Once again thanks for the hard work on getting these codecs out definitely helped me out.

Thanks Shaun. Great to find something like this. :)

I had downloaded movies but had no sound.I tried several other things but your codec package worked like a charm.
And Quicktime wants to know why I won’t buy Q-Pro from them,if they want my money they need to put a product like yours in Quicktime Pro.

SWEEET!!

To those asking if it will play .mkv files (Matroska).

Perian supports playing these files and Perian is included in this pack. However please note that Perian has to load the entire .mkv file before it can start playing it. This is unlike all the other formats which will start playing straight away.

The Perian team are aware of this and hope to change this in the future but even the recent Perian 1.1 still has this limitation

Can I use this pack and is there a perian for me?
I’m a bit concerned after Dcoy9630’s experiences.
I like Ouicktime Pro because of the editing possibilities.

Thanks so much for this download! I was unable to get sound on a certain avi and QT didn’t want to tell me which particular codec I needed.

I had problems with the Perian and aviImporter codecs causing QT to refuse to start properly, however (QT 7, OS X.5 Leopard). Removing them resolved the problem and everything else is great. Thanks again!

Sorry for these questions, but I’m a mac beginner…
