The “Digg Effect”

digg.jpgYesterday, I posted a Mac Codec Pack with the primary purpose of hoping it would go front page on digg, to see what would happen.

Success, It went frontpage, we got bombarded with visitors, and kept going.  The “Digg Effect” is incredible, while the users of Digg don’t click ads (we don’t have any on here, so that doesn’t matter) and they don’t comment, its a great tool for smaller startup websites to get going, if you can handle it.  Last week, I had someone go frontpage on one of my other websites which was hosted on a virtual server, and was shut down within minutes of going front page. Microsoft to Buy Yahoo? Shoemoney says so…

Yahoo LogoSo I read a blog post by Jeremy (ShoeMoney.com) about how Microsoft might buy Yahoo in 2007 and all the reasons why. I enjoyed it so much I figured I’d post a commentary on his points. So here you go:

1. The search algorithm… duh… Microsoft’s horrid search algo is by far the single biggest problem that Microsoft has right now. The problem is that when there are no users using the search engine then there are a ton of ads that never are shown. If Microsoft were to acquire Yahoos search algorithm this would be a GIANT step in getting users back.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that no one uses MSN, it’s popular in a lot of places outside the US (more so than yahoo) and inside the US, it’s got a decent market share. However, it does suck (no argument there) and Microsoft could do a lot better with Yahoo’s algorithm and technologies.

RegisterFly Renewal Nightmare!

registerfly-logo.gif

So for anyone who’s even considering registering a domain name through RegisterFly.com, I beg you to consider otherwise.

Last year when we were first starting the business, it was every penny that needed to be saved. At the time RegisterFly was offering very cheap .com/.net domains and I figured it was a reputable website and it would be alright. They had even redesigned the website the week before so it was very streamlined and professional. Little did I know what I would be getting myself into about a year later.

December rolled up quite quickly and it was time to renew my domains. I had completely forgot about it until I received the first reminder from RegisterFly, so I will give them points for that, but not many…maybe just like a quarter of a point. Anyway, I logged in, entered my credit card number, and renewed my domains for an additional year. Easy right? Yea…

Rest of the story after the break..
